Idea 15

Gilbran Alcocer I used to love walking around the grounds and lake at Himley Hall, and looking at the art work for sale in the coffee shop. But now my memories of the place are bittersweet. I used to take my Dad there before he passed away in 2024, and I remember visiting there the day before my cat was run over in 2023. Maybe I will feel differently as time passes. This was taken on a rainy day, before I went inside to take cover.

Spring Serenade

The spring chill Never easy to ignore, Beds down the dusk. And the camellia tree That sparkled only Twelve hours before, Shakes black As the skulk unleashes. Hands cover ears Waiting for the sun, The great deceiver, To arrive Imperceptibly, Never revealing its Companion's misdeeds, Until the ever present Warning of birdsong Laments the break Of day, once more.

Birthday Flowers

The gesture was too big. A card and a few kind Words would have sufficed. Or a second hand book So, I put them outside In the spring afternoon. And they lie there, Unreachable. A single rose Entreats for help, Wanting to live. Not understanding the cut. I take it out, Vase and water it. It has a few days At the most. The alstroemeria Look relieved, In their plastic Wrapping. Joyful in the temporary. Impatient and fatuous In their blankness. At once smothering And transient.

Poppies

Lasting less than Ten days, They lurch In vain. I frame a few, Hoping to make them Everlasting. But they remain Anonymous, Among a million Others That strive Not to fade Out of memory.
