Cicada

01 Oct 2010 229
These cicadas are also called annual cicadas or dog days cicadas because unlike periodical cicadas they appear every year during the "dog days" of mid to late summer. Their life cycle, about 2-5 years, is much shorter than periodical cicadas. They are also larger than periodical cicadas. On my screen door, Etowah County, Alabama (DSC00520)

Periodic Cicada (13 Year)

01 Jun 2011 181
This cicada belongs to brood XIX which emerged this spring (2011). It is the largest southern brood of periodic cicadas. The din in the woods was remarkable. Glad it only happens once every 13 years. Etowah County, Alabama. (IMG_5707)
