Killdeer on an Egg

06 Jun 2015 2 4 286
When I parked near this gravel area in a Gadsden Mall parking lot to go check out a nearby heron rookery, I spotted this bird. I was quite close but the bird did not move which seemed odd because they don't usually let me get near them. I thought it might be sick or injured until I saw the egg. The bird had frozen hoping to remain camouflaged, but then it felt more threatened, began its broken wing routine, while running off, and calling anxiously hoping to lure me away. It kept up its attempts to distract me from its nest and would not return until I finally parked the car farther away. Gadsden, Alabama (IMG_4726)

Can You Spot the Egg?

06 Jun 2015 2 235
This red gravel area in a Gadsden Mall parkinga area is where a pair of killdeer decided to have their nest, if you can call it that. In this case, basically the egg was just laid in a space between the gravel. Can you spot it? Sort of incredible considering the constant traffic on the road around the mall, although this section of parking is remote and rarely used. I had parked there to go check out a nearby heron rookery. Carolina Wren Nest with Egg

This nest is on my deck in a flower pot that is partially covered by a wind chime I had laid there until I could hang it. Because the nest is a essentially a tunnel, it was very dark inside so I had to shine a flashlight into to see and photo the egg. Unfortunately, because I had the flashlight in one hand, I had to shoot one handed so I was not able to get a very sharply focused image. Etowah County, Alabama (IMG_3000)
