Acanthocephala terminalis - In my woods, Etowah County, Alabama (P4180255)

Aka toe-biter because underwater they will stab a toe if it threatens them. Also aka electric light bug because they hang around light at night. While they look like a cockroach they are not even related. They livemostly submerged in shallow fresh water ponds and pools Rather than a giant waterbug, this may be an Eastern toe-biter. They closely resemble each other. I suspect this one was attracted to lights outside the fast food restaurant where it died. Gadsden, Alabamas (IMG_0869)

This cicada belongs to brood XIX which emerged this spring (2011). It is the largest southern brood of periodic cicadas. The din in the woods was remarkable. Glad it only happens once every 13 years. Etowah County, Alabama. (IMG_5723)
