A Toad, a Cat, and a Whirligig

Was out this morning looking for some subjects for the first day of 365 project when I noticed this guy swimming for its life in a large plastic container that was partially filled with water. The sides were to slick to climb and the water was quite cool. So I rescued it. Since it was cold and exhausted, it was a pliant subject. In my garden, Etowah County, Alabama (IMG_4219)

Named by my son after a well known Atlanta radio personality. Ludlow came to us as a very sick adult stray that the vet thought would not survive. We had him for 14 years. He had all the traits of a ragdoll cat. Scanned 35mm negative (t010)
Lady

Lady Underfoot., one of my much beloved cats. She came into our lives many years ago on a bitterly cold winter day in Illinois. It was about 20 degrees below zero. My son heard her crying while waiting for the school bus. She was in a storm sewer. We did not know the school bus was not coming that day - Lady's first piece of good luck or no one would have heard her. The second piece of good luck was that my car would not start the morning so I had not left for work when my son came home in great distress over her. He had managed to get someone to call animal control and had waited in the cold for them to come as he had been told to do. But when they arrived, they did not see him and just drove off. I went with him to see if I could get her to crawl out on a scarf I dropped down for her, but she didn't. So I went home to wait for my father who was coming to give my car a jump. When he arrived he took charge. Got the grill off the sewer and reached down to get her. That's when we discoved she was frozen in the ice. We chipped her out and the rest is history. She lost half her tail and the toes on one of her back feet and had a small notch on her ear. We named her Frosty but, she was such a lover she was always underfoot rubbing on our legs. My father dubbed her Lady Underfoot, which became shortened to Lady. We had her for fourteen years. Scanned 35mm negative. (r025)
