MV Elise approaching Newhaven swing bridge - 19 11…

31 Dec 2019 5 2 254
I have taken very few photographs in the past three months. I happened to be near the swing bridge when the road traffic lights started flashing and the horns sounded to warn that the road would close and the bridge would open to allow this ship to pass downstream. Very few ships call at the North Quay these days, so I hurried up the bridge and took a few shots with my compact camera, which lives in my backpack.

I think that this is probably the Werra - or a sister ship - see www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/31961605 for a close-up

Not a very exciting view, with the hatch covers obscuring the bridge, but my attempts to get a stern view were hampered by glare, as the sun was immediately behind the ship!

One day when my wife was meeting friends in Eastbourne I decided to take the train in the other direction and revisit Shoreham-by-Sea which we had briefly visited a few years ago. Of course the rail traffic isn't too exciting along Southern's 'Western Coastway', but there is an ancient church, the beach & harbour and a large array of house boats. Shoreham and its neighbour Portslade are working ports with a steady stream of coastal cargo ships coming and going.
