A stained glass panel from Barcombe Place, Lewes. The inscription reads:- 'Here Sir Thomas Grantham of Goltho, Co.Lincoln is knighted at the castle of Belvoir, by King James 6th of Scotland as he journeyed to London to be crowned King of England. A.D.1603.' The Grantham.s owned Barcombe Place from 1839 to 1944. Although they may have had links to Sir Thomas and Sir John Grantham, in the 18th century the family were basket workers. These two panels were presumably commissioned after the family had climbed the social ladder until they acquired Barcombe Manor in 1839.
