Phillips City Studio was making high quality studio portraits and doing other photographic work in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. When this was uploaded in August 2020 there was due to be an exhibition of their work in the Wells City Museum. We lived in the house just the other side of the one with the higher facade, towards the far end of the Close.

This group of five engraved slate panels are on the Thames riverside walk, under Southwark Bridge. They record the times when the Thames froze over for lengthy periods and fairs were held on the ice. They were engraved by Richard Kindersley. I haven't yet established who commissioned them.

This group of five engraved slate panels are on the Thames riverside walk, under Southwark Bridge. They record the times when the Thames froze over for lengthy periods and fairs were held on the ice. They were engraved by Richard Kindersley. I haven't yet established who commissioned them. The lighting is quite difficult, particularly for this panel, as it is near the western entrance. The slate surface and the incised lettering and images are also difficult to see face on. That is why most are reproduced with odd corners missing, as the perspective correction software leaves them with unsquare corners.
