Uploaded to complete an old story. When London buses were privatized, some of the new franchisees did not have enough buses to service the routes that they had bid for, so they hired extra vehicles in from anywhere they could. I wonder if the advertisers got compensation for their adverts being far from their potential customers!

A Pink bus shelter with a Bench - two groups at once - I might even try the London Bus group as well!
I know that the bench can hardly be seen, but someone is sitting on it!
One tiny confession - the height of the lamp-post has been reduced slightly to stop the lower part looking too small!
As part of a regeneration scheme some well-known locally based artists have contributed designs to cheer up the area.

W J Ward - Builder's sign - Peckham - circa 2000

What is interesting about this sign, is that it is in a Victorian or Edwardian style, yet painted in the late 1990s.

These railings run round two sides of a triangular traffic island, at the south end of Rye Lane, Peckham, South London. Interest was shown in this element of the installation, so I thought I would feature it in its environment.

For Southwark's most recent public artwork you will have to go to www.flickr.com/photos/southwarkcouncil/12790268053/in/photostream and www.southwark.gov.uk/news/article/55/public_art_in_camberwell until I get the chance to photograph it and bring it here!

Looking at the direction these lights are pointing, perhaps these should be called 'park lights'. This green space is the start of Peckham Rye common, which extends about a mile south from here, with Peckham Rye Park at the far end.

The Irish origins of at least some of the travellers using this site is very evident. The building to the rear of the site is Peckham Police Station.
Peckham Settlement - London SE15

Settlements were charitable organisations with a base in a deprived area, usually providing community facilities, supported by benefactors from more well-off areas or institutions. In this case the Union of Girls' Schools was resourced by a group of fee-paying girls schools. Students from the schools would volunteer to run children's holiday schemes, youth clubs and similar activities. In more recent times the settlements have become community run centres.

The bus was, I think, the venue for a health promotion campaign.
The pillars are at funny angles, they are not the result of my poor use of camera distortion correction software.

Parts of the towpath under and around the bridge have been retained and it is easy to visualize water where the tarmac is now. The canal's route has now been preserved as a linear park running from Peckham High Street to the Old Kent Road.
For a nineteenth century map of the area go to www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/26372743
