Built in 1917 & 1918 respectively, by Avonside Engineering, these two small saddle tanks were owned by and worked for the Port of Bristol Authority. Alan Newman was a colleague and friend of my father and a well respected railway photographer. This little print was glued into Dad's engine spotting log for the mid to late 1950s. I hadn't seen it until today when I was looking to confirm the details of the neighbouring photo. in a later log. Portbury has been preserved and is, at the last mention I can find, at the Bristol Harbour Railway.

These maps come from a rather dilapidated gazetteer dated about 1884. It has a number of cities and towns at this sort of scale, English county maps and rather small scale maps of Scotland and Ireland. The Welsh maps had all been removed at an earlier date. If anyone wants maps of other areas I will try to scan them, but my current scanner is harder to use when scanning anything over A4. I do have several cities and counties already on file. The maps have been loaded at a larger than life file size so that one can look at areas in detail. I thought that this map, with all the different railways shown would be on interest. Most, but not all, were subsequently absorbed into the GWR.

This photo is of 41243 on the 5.44pm to Bath Green Park. The other photo taken at BTM on the same page is dated 12.8.1960, but Dad appears to have rubbed out this one's date. So who knows?! Note the official notice forbidding train spotters to pass the board, recognizing that they were permitted up to that point.

This is a nice one. Imagine that lot at the end of a platform these days! Scary PA announcements, dayglo jackets, PCSO (Transport), risk assessments - all things in the future then! This is an unusual scene. A summer Saturday working - the 12.15pm from Weston-super-Mare to Sheffield, hauled by an ex-LNER B1, arriving at Bristol. It was taken by Dad on 8.8.1964. The Taunton MRC Bath Green Park layout was featured in the January 2012 Railway Modeller and among the photos was another LNER B1 61143 recalling a similar duty on 12.9.1964.

There is a cropped version among the scanned prints, but with so many Bristol railway fans about I thought a wider view might be appreciated.
