Shoreham Port tug Adurni - Southwick - 20 5 2023

Seabed leveling gear can be used to reform silt, sand and shingle where the tides have built up ridges which may impede vessels travel through the port and its approaches. Adurni is the Roman name for the river Adur which runs into the sea through Shoreham town and port.

Acamar is a fairly recent addition to the port's small fleet of vessels. The name comes from the arabic word for a river mouth.

MV Elise approaching Newhaven swing bridge - 19 11…

I have taken very few photographs in the past three months. I happened to be near the swing bridge when the road traffic lights started flashing and the horns sounded to warn that the road would close and the bridge would open to allow this ship to pass downstream. Very few ships call at the North Quay these days, so I hurried up the bridge and took a few shots with my compact camera, which lives in my backpack.

Newhaven North Quay - industrial

Another experiment - poster edges and saturation this time!

Newhaven North Quay industrial - a bit grungy

An experiment with downloaded brushes. Maybe it looks as though I should clean my lens a bit more often.

M/V Ohlau - Newhaven - 7.1.2014

Not a very exciting view, with the hatch covers obscuring the bridge, but my attempts to get a stern view were hampered by glare, as the sun was immediately behind the ship!

Quay full of industry - North Quay - Newhaven - 11…

Newhaven is a small industrial enclave surrounded by the South Downs National Park. Here we see one of its two main industrial quays. There are two ferry berths, one currently unused, a marina, the RNLI station, six or seven fishing boat jetties and, to the left of this view, round the other side of Denton Island, several boat yards. There are several industrial and trading estates around the harbour area, containing warehouse, manufacturing and retail facilities. The rounded building with the two tall vent pipes is the heat recovery refuse incinerator.

London, West India, Millwall & Surrey Docks - map…

30 Jan 2012 1 726
This is part of a page from a gazetteer of Great Britain & Ireland, that my father dated to circa 1884, by looking at the railways. He was a great railway enthusiast and knew which railways were built when. It quotes details from the 1881 census, which confirms the 1880s dating. The gazetteer came from my maternal grandfather, who lived the latter years of his life in Cardiff. This may explain why the maps of Wales are missing. The cover and front pages with the publishing details have also gone. The major cities are shown in this amount of detail, but the county maps are in much smaller scales. The maps are clearly by a number of different map makers.
