It appears that these old railway carriages may have been part of a scheme to rehouse service personnel returning from World War 1. There is a group on Flickr with further examples of this type of development known as 'plotlands'

A second photo from the 1953 holiday to Margate. This time one of me from the family album. Wells in Somerset, where we lived then, still had a railway station, so I guess that, apart from crossing London, the whole journey would have been by rail. We might even have used the tube for that. While in that album I found a photo of me looking out of the cab window of a loco in Ripon station, but as we lived there it didn't fall into the Flickr 'Day we caught the train' group's terms of reference!
