Village Hall - Iford - Sussex 16 4 2015

I initially thought that this was the village school, with play equipment in the yard and I suppose it may have been in a past life, but it is now quite a handsome village hall.

There is at least one more Bishopstone in England - in Wiltshire to the south-west of Salisbury. This is the Sussex one. This valley is towards the eastern end of the South Downs National Park, which was established in 2011, The park covers large areas of rural Sussex, on the south coast of England. While villages like this are included in the park, larger communities, like neighbouring Newhaven & Seaford are outside its boundaries.

Viper's Bugloss Tide Mills 5 8 2024

07 Aug 2024 2 2 51
I first noticed these purple fields as I passed by on a train. This a low-lying area, between the sea and the South Downs. Crops of maize and linseed have been grown there in past years. Viper's Bugloss is not an obvious cash crop. Indeed in some states in the USA it is classified as 'invasive'. It is, however, good for encouraging the proliferation of pollinators. When I pondered the reason for this planting, on another website, to which I subscribe, it was suggested that it may be as a soil improvement agent as part of a crop rotation trial, of which there are a number around the UK, my informant tells me.

Victorian bathing machine - Seaford Town Museum 14…

Bathing machines were used on beaches in Victorian times to allow ladies to enter the sea water in a modest manner. They would enter through a door on the land side of the 'machine' and change into their swimming clothes. These were often costumes that completely covered their bodies. The machine would be rolled into the sea, sometimes by men and sometimes by a horse. Some just had steps so that the lady climbed into the sea, visibly but discretely. Others had screens on either side so that one could enter the water without being seen, except possibly by a maid who helped to dress and undress the swimmer. Rows of 'machines' can be seen in this 19th century photograph - www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26108827 Seaford Museum is housed in Martello Tower 74, on Seaford Esplanade.

Uploaded to add the the Vintage Photos Theme Park - Milkmen or milk women or.......... food deliveries theme - slightly off theme but it seems to be the best I can offer. Although it doesn't seem to be at a station (and it certainly isn't a home delivery) there is a second photo on the platform, with the younger vendor serving an older lady, beside the train.
