Redshank at Tidemills 28 11 2015

A Redshank looking for lunch in Mill Creek - in the pond that used to be filled by the tide and then its contents were run through the mill wheels. That's all long gone. I am not sure where the rubbish comes from as it is at least a quarter of a mile from a road.

The wreck Newhaven - 14.6.2014

20 Jun 2014 279
This was the last picture of this old ship in this condition. There were shots of it ablaze on the net recently, so I shall be interested to see what it looks like now, when I am in Newhaven tomorrow. Later - I now see in the local paper that it was a controlled fire, that got a bit out of control! Demolition workers were clearing the wooden parts before cutting up the steel hull. Will it be gone tomorrow - doubt it. Six-year-old grandson will be upset. It was one of his favorite landmarks when we first moved here five years ago.

MV Helen loading waste at North Quay - Newhaven -…

18 Jun 2011 2 347
There used to be regular collections of commercial waste (as opposed to domestic waste, which goes into the incinerator) from this wharf. Then there was a fire in one of the large storage sheds, which took almost a week to extinguish. Since then the traffic seems to have almost vanished, although a new shed has been built. The scrap metal shipments from the other end of the harbour, at South Quay, don't seem to keep up with the deliveries that come in by road. The heaps of metal seem to be growing, although there is nearly always a freighter, in port, loading.

This sculpture was made to tour around the country spreading the word about waste and the environment. It was then installed at the Eden Project in Cornwall. More information about the sculpture can be found at www.edenproject.com/whats-it-all-about/climate-and-environment/sustainability-at-eden/giant-sculpture-made-of-waste February 2023 The above link leads nowhere now.
