Defences old & new - 15.12.2011

Offered to the Coasts of the sea.... group as a demonstration of the way our town's sea defences are formed. Some shingle is just pushed back up the beach. In other parts of the beach shingle is collected from the eastern end, where it gathers against a large breakwater, and is moved to the centre of the beach, where it is formed into a bank. This is done once or twice a year and takes several weeks to do. It is apparently cheaper than building breakwaters or a seawall. There are several photos of the trucks and diggers at work in this album. One is here www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/30750511/in/album/511689
