After being destroyed in WWII it was restored in the 50’s and endowed with elaborate stained-glass windows designed by Georg Meistermann. The sarcophagi of the last princes of Saarbrücken are to be found in the choir. The church is now a museum of the "Stiftung Saarländischer Kulturbesitz" (Foundation for the Cultural Heritage of the Saarland).

The Grevenburg Castle was built around 1350 by Count Johann III, a son of the legendary Countess Loretta, and was the ancestral seat of the counts of Sponheim until 1437. During the turmoil of the wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle changed hands 13 times. In 1734, it was taken and destroyed by the French.

The existence of Saarbrucken Castle dates back to the year 999. Over the centuries, a few different castles were built on the original site, with a Renaissance castle built in the 17th century in Baroque style..
