Parish Boundary Marker - Paddington Parish

26 Dec 2013 372
Parish boundary marker in Kensington Gardens. This (and the marker in the next photo) marks the boundary between the Borough of Paddington (a.k.a. Paddington Parish) and St Margaret Westminster Parish. This pair was mentioned by J.M. Barrie in Peter Pan, but he took literary license and turned them into headstones of dead infants who were buried in Kensington Gardens. londonist.com/2013/09/the-secret-stones-of-kensington-gardens.php

Take Courage

15 Oct 2006 1 2 507
Red Cross Way, Southwark. I thought these were encouraging words left over from the war (the South Bank was pretty heavily bombed in the blitz), but it turns out that it's an advert for Courage Ale. As seen in the film "O Lucky Man."

Nancy's Steps

06 Nov 2009 233
Dickens Walk in Southwark. www.walksoflondon.co.uk/31/index.shtml It was on the steps of the old bridge that Nancy’s fateful meeting with Mr Brownlow and Rose Maylie took place in Oliver Twist. Here she betrayed Fagin, Sikes and Monks and was overheard by Noah Claypole. When Sikes learned what she had done, he murdered her at his house in Bethnal Green, not on the steps of the bridge, as the plaque on the wall (which I couldn't find) states wrongly. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Angel Place

White Hart Inn

06 Nov 2009 230
Dickens Walk in Southwark. www.walksoflondon.co.uk/31/index.shtml Borough High Street near White Hart Yard. Nothing, save the name of the yard, survives of what was, until its demolition in 1889, the largest of the coaching inns that lined Borough High Street. It was to the White Hart Inn that Mr Pickwick followed Alfred Jingle and Rachel Wardle, following their elopement, and in so doing first met with Sam Weller in Pickwick Papers.
