Disused tube station, the Strand. The station was opened in 1907 and renamed Aldwych station in 1915. It was closed in 1940 and used as an air raid shelter. During World War II, the tunnels of the station were used by the National Gallery and the British Museum to store valuable pieces of their collections, including the Elgin Marbles and the Sutton Hoo hoard. Used by fewer and fewer passengers after the war and running at a financial deficit, the station was closed for good in 1993. It is often now used as a location for filming movies and television programmes.
