The institution that held poor people with mental health issues. During the famine it was extremely overcrowded and conditions were deplorable. There is still a psychiatric hospital on the grounds.

Coaches, and later buses, used to come up the hill to Northampton State Hospital, and this is part of the shelter where people waited for them. Now that the main building has been reduced to a three-story high pile of rubble, this is the only bit of 1867 architecture left. They've just given it a spiffy new coat of paint as part of the redevelopment project. See where this picture was taken. [?]
