Palimpsest of real and faux ghost signs, Upper Street, Islington Here's what Sam Roberts has to say about this sign in his book Ghost Signs: A London Story: "This is the second faux ghost sign on this wall inspired by the original signage advertising the Hare and Hounds Garage. This took its name from th coaching inn that could be found here as far back as 1808. "The first overpainting was done in 2008 for the Albert & Pearl pub. This borrowed visual elements from the earlier sign but at the expense of the original. In 2012 the Hous of Wolf sign was printed by the scenic artist Tabby Riley, again with a ghosted aesthetic. Two signs, one painted over the other, fading at different rates. King's and Bates's were owned by the same company. One sign reads: KING'S Tartaric Fruit Salts for Gout and Rheumatism BATES'S Salve Cures Wounds & Sores The other says (more faded at the top left due to how the sun hits it): THE RENOWNED SALVE for WOUNDS & SORES OF ALL KINDS. 80 YEARS _______ ALSO FOR KING'S CITRATE OF MAGNESIA INVENTED IN 1844 The ORIGINAL SAFEST & BEST Credit to Ghost Signs: A London Story by Sam Roberts for deciphering this. This was once a snooker hall, and at some other time there was a printer here. Ghostsign, Willow Cottages, Stoke Newington.

This ghostsign had a lot of graffiti painted over it, so someone had the bright idea to paint it over and then attempt to "restore" the old advert. It's a mess now.
