I think the room on the left is a small synagogue. Venetian law at one time prohibited the building of separate synagogues, and Jewish law required that there be nothing between the congregation and the heavens.

The oldest pawnshop in the world. Jews were allowed to engage in only a few occupations, money lending being one. Since the population was largely illiterate, each pawnbroker used a different colored paper for their receipts. Banco Rosso used red slips, and thus the phrase "in the red" was born.

The ghetto occupied such a small space and was so crowded that apartment blocks were built six or seven storeys high (most other buildings in Venice are three or four storeys). Even then, families often slept in shifts as they didn't have room for beds for everyone.
