More than 60 protestants, known collectively as the Marian Martyrs, were burned at the stake nearby during the reign of Queen Mary (hence "Marian martyrs") in the mid 1550s. {In gilded letters around and below the granite arch:} Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. The street was named in remembrance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of agricultural labourers who, in 1834, were convicted of swearing to a secret oath and sent off to Australia in punishment. 800,000 people signed a petition for their release, many of them from Islington.
