More than 60 protestants, known collectively as the Marian Martyrs, were burned at the stake nearby during the reign of Queen Mary (hence "Marian martyrs") in the mid 1550s.
{In gilded letters around and below the granite arch:}
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.
The noble army of martyrs praise Thee!
{On the main tablet:}
Within a few feet of this spot,
John Rogers,
John Bradford,
John Philpot,
and other servants of God, suffered death by fire for the faith of Christ, in the years 1555, 1556, 1557.
{On the small brass plaque below:}

Tolpuddle Street

The street was named in remembrance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of agricultural labourers who, in 1834, were convicted of swearing to a secret oath and sent off to Australia in punishment. 800,000 people signed a petition for their release, many of them from Islington. The Home Secretary agreed to release them in 1836. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolpuddle_Martyrs
