This restaurant dates from the 1880s, serving meals to the workers from the nearby area in Farringdon Road. It's now too upmarket for the working class to afford.

The ANC had its London headquarters here in Penton Street. The anti-apartheid movement was very strong in Britain, and provided crucial support to the ANC. South African security police bombed these offices in 1982. africanhistory.about.com/od/apartheid/a/ANC_London.htm

White Lion & Penton Streets

I can't remember what's significant about this location.

The west side of Chapel Market.

Chapel Market (west side)

Penton Street. It doesn't have anything to do with radical history, but I like the sign and lamp posts.

Tolpuddle Street

The street was named in remembrance of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of agricultural labourers who, in 1834, were convicted of swearing to a secret oath and sent off to Australia in punishment. 800,000 people signed a petition for their release, many of them from Islington. The Home Secretary agreed to release them in 1836. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tolpuddle_Martyrs

The start of a walk with David Rosenberg called Visionaries, Rebels and Dissenters: A walk through Islington’s radical history . David's walks are great -- he knows a ton about radical history. Near this spot, there's a pub where the BNP used to meet in the 1980s. They'd get pissed and then go out into Chapel Market to try to recruit new members for their racist political party. They didn't have much success. Islington has a long history of leftist, anti-racist politics, as I learned on the walk. I doubt UKIP did very well in this borough in the recent election. Thank goodness for Islington.
