Installation in the moat at the Tower of London of 888,246 poppies, in commemoration of the British and Commonwealth dead during World War I. The ceramic poppies were "planted" by volunteers over many weeks -- the first being planted on the day that WWI broke out and the last on Armistice Day (November 11). I was there in early September -- about 1/2 way through the installation. By the weekend leading up to Armistice Day, the crowds were so thick that it was hard to see into the moat, which was by then solid red.

Designed by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, the installation was named after a poem, written by a soldier who died in the trenches, and discovered by Cummins in a Chesterfield library.

The day we were at Bletchley Park, there was filming going on of the movie The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (as Alan Turing) and Keira Knightly. We only saw the extras -- these guys were at the craft service truck.

There are 70 confederate soldiers who died at the Battle of New Bern buried under this monument. Our cemetery guide told us something creepy about the vault where they're buried, but I can't remember what she said. See where this picture was taken. [?]
