Bright sunlight makes it hard to read the plaque. It says: "In medieval times this was an unconsecrated graveyard for prostitutes or "Winchester Geese." By the 18th century it had become a paupers' burial ground, which closed in 1853. Here local people have created a memorial shrine. The diocese applied for permission to remove the tree, but it was denied after a community campaign to save it. www.urban75.org/blog/save-this-tree-campaign-battles-to-keep-a-fine-london-plane-from-the-axe
