Not sure what this pull chain was for. The ring was too high to be for one of the bells. It might have something to do with the downspouts from the gutters.

The first public drinking fountain in London, a gift of Sam Gurney M.P. in 1859. Erected on Holborn Hill (now Snow Hill), removed when Holborn Viaduct was constructed in 1867.
