Maximilian Maria Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan friar, who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II.
His father was an ethnic German and his mother was Polish. He refused to sign the Deutsche Volksliste, which would have given him rights similar to those of German citizens in exchange for recognizing his German ancestry. In 1941 he was imprisoned and transferred to Auschwitz as prisoner #16670.
At the end of July 1941, three prisoners disappeared from the camp, prompting SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Fritzsch, the deputy camp commander, to pick 10 men to be starved to death in an underground bunker to deter further escape attempts. When one of the selected men cried out: "My wife! My children!", Kolbe volunteered to take his place.
According to an eye witness, an assistant janitor at that time, in his prison cell, Kolbe led the prisoners in prayer to Our Lady. Each time the guards checked on him, he was standing or kneeling in the middle of the cell and looking calmly at those who entered. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained alive. The guards wanted the bunker emptied, so they gave Kolbe a lethal injection of carbolic acid. Kolbe is said to have raised his left arm and calmly waited for the deadly injection. His remains were cremated on 15 August, the feast day of the Assumption of Mary.
Now we are commemorating the 80th anniversary of his martyrdom.

I found this altar in Drohiczyn, inside an ancient Franciscan church. The church was badly damaged during World War II. It was rebuild, but they kept the remains of one old altar for people to remember the atrocities of war. Now the altar is dedicated to St. Maximilian Kolbe, O.F.M. Conv..

St Anthony of Padua Church in Sokółka
The Church is not an old one (built in the 19th century) but it is really beautiful.
Now it is famous because of the Eucharistic miracle that happened there in 2008.
Heals from deadly diseases, heals ancient wounds, and even causes that love returns to human hearts.
The Host from the church of St. Antoni in Sokółka works wonders.
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven;
whoever eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I will give is my flesh
for the life of the world” (John 6:51).

Church of St. Roch and John the Baptist (16th century) at Brochów, Poland
-----
Built of red brick, the church in Brochów (at present called St. John the Baptist and St. Roch) is one of the most valuable examples and monuments of Polish ‘defensive’ church architecture. Constructed between the 14th and 16th centuries, it was beautifully and carefully restored very recently, for the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth, and is truly impressive both inside and outside.
The church’s current facilities are almost entirely derived from modern times, as the original church was burned down during the World War I. Very few items survived, among them a wooden crucifix that still hangs in the aisle, as well as fireplaces that were used for cooking food for the church staff and members in times of siege.
The defensive function temple surrounding the church is provided by a two-storey area with embrasure and reinforced windows. By contrast, according to experts, the wall with the corner bastions serves a more symbolic purpose, and its genuinely defensive function is limited.
An interesting fact is the location of towers: two stand at an ending-point on the rise of the two buildings, and another stands opposite. This architecture, though very typical for churches in Italy, is a rarity in Poland.
