Another panel test

Panelmania

I really don't know if this panel will ever see the light of day. The boards have MLF10 packages on them, and I'll have to see how assembly goes first! The prototypes were ordered at OSHPARK.

Left: better - Right: not so god

The right board looks really nice. I've already built it. However it was a PAIN to assemble by hand. Tiny 0603 parts too close together. It took me ages to complete. Too much effort to be fun if repeated. The left board still comes with the LEDS. They are the whole point of this board's existence. The tiny resistors however were replaced with easily manageable 1206 resistor packs. Assembling 4 large parts vs. 16 tiny parts with no room to move. Lesson learned.

Looks a bit like...

the heavily asthmatic lead character of the Star Wars movies. This is in fact the drill pattern of a printed circuit board that I'm waiting for. Maybe I should give it the code name 'Lord Helmet' ;-)

This should be useful for me. Floating inputs suck.

Board-shrink to just 50x50mm. This will make it cheaper. Although I like the looks of Rev 0.1 much better, cost cannot be neglected.

The backside of it.

Next prototype

This one had been sitting in the back of my head for ages. Now this seems to be ready for a prototype run. No PIR sensor, just couldn't get an affordable small one with integrated lens and amp. Still better than my current CFL bulbs.

I used the service offered by mayhewlabs.com/3dpcb A word of caution. At least with firefox this needs LOTs of RAM!

KiCad - panelized by hand

21 Mar 2013 1011
It's doable for small panels, but gets tedious pretty quickly. Creating a footprint for the mouse-bites helped a bit. It would be really nice if KiCad supported "cloned" copies, so changes to the parent automatically propagate to all children. This panel was ordered at hackvana .
