This is not the preferred mode of operation. It works best directed at a dark corner which then reflects / scatters the light into the room (assuming a white / lightly colored wallpaper).

The bottom half is turned off. Assuming one is lying on the couch, it would only illuminate the brain-container. The top half on the other hand perfectly illuminates a book.
