They used some sort of glue to attach the quartz, but it either softened over the years or it wasn't strong enough at the beginning. Tapping the device strongly on one side (as might happen if the user gets annoyed) made the thing move out of center - permanently.

Either solder it down properly or use glue that is strong enough!
