Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets by Manet…

03 Mar 2024 141
Title: Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets Artist: Edouard Manet (French, Paris 1832–1883 Paris) Date: 1872 Geography: Country of Origin France Culture: French Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 21 7/8 × 15 15/16 in. (55.5 × 40.5 cm) Framed: 28 1/8 × 22 5/8 in. (71.5 × 57.5 cm) Classification: Paintings Credit Line: Musée d'Orsay, Paris (RF 1998 30) Among the eleven portraits in oil that Manet made of Morisot, this work is distinctive for the arresting gaze of the sitter, who is framed in a virtuosic composition of blacks. The striking beribboned hat and scarf signal her status as a fashionable Parisian, and the bouquet of violets clutched to her chest, a token of affection, hints at a flirtation. The journalist and critic Théodore Duret originally acquired the painting. Morisot purchased it when it came up for sale in 1894, the year before she died. Young Woman Seated on a Sofa, ca. 1879 Berthe Morisot (French, 1841–1895) Oil on canvas 31 3/4 x 39 1/4 in. (80.6 x 99.7 cm) Signed (lower left): Berthe Morisot Partial and Promised Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Dillon, 1992 (1992.103.2) Born to a French upper-middle-class family, Berthe Morisot diverged from societal norms when she established herself as a professional artist. She exhibited at the official Salons and in seven of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. Morisot was at her apogee when she painted this model in her Paris apartment. By then she had melded the bravura brushwork adopted from her mentor and brother-in-law, Édouard Manet, with her own opalescent palette. Text from: www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1992.103.2

Annenberg, 2002 Accession Number: 2003.20.8 On View Gallery Label: The fashionable portraitist Jacques-Emile Blanche, a friend of Berthe Morisot, recollected how and when this painting was made at the Villa Fodor, the family home of Marguerite Carré, the sitter: "One day, she [Morisot] painted before my eyes a charming portrait of Mlle Marguerite in a light pink dress; indeed, the entire canvas was light. Here Berthe Morisot was fully herself, already eliminating from nature both shadows and half-tones." But the painting required several sessions, since Morisot "constantly changed her mind and painted over what she had done once the session was at an end . . . ." "The Pink Dress" is one of the artist's few surviving early works. Text from: www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/collection_database/europe...

Detail of Madame Boursier and her Daughter by Bert…

26 May 2010 350
Portrait of Mme Boursier and Her Daughter (Portrait de Mme Boursier et de sa fille) A member of the Impressionist circle, Morisot focused on the domestic spaces associated with women rather than the public venues and events painted by her male counterparts. In this image of her relatives, Morisot invites the viewer into a richly appointed middle-class interior with its floral upholstery, upright piano and sheet music, framed mirror, and porcelain vase with flowers. With quick, unblended strokes, the painter's deft brushwork summarily defines the forms, patterns, and textures of the elegant furnishings and fashionable clothing. Morisot underscores the intimacy of the scene by placing the little girl on Madame Boursier's lap as well as by bringing her subjects close to the picture plane. Artist: Berthe Morisot, French, 1841-1895 Medium: Oil on canvas Place Made: France Dates: ca. 1873 Dimensions: 29 5/16 x 22 3/8 in. (74.5 x 56.8 cm) Frame: 36 3/4 x 30 x 2 1/2 in.
