In a catalogue of her husband's work, Madame Fantin-Latour included this still life in her list of thirty-one compositions of flowers and fruit painted in 1874. The branch of apples suggests that the present picture was painted in the fall; the pansies are spring flowers that were probably cultivated in a hothouse.

This is one of four still lifes commissioned from the artist in 1866 by Michael Spartali, a wealthy Greek businessman and diplomat who lived in London. Fantin-Latour worked on the suite of pictures from March through September, inspired to produce variations on an ambitious composition that he debuted at the Salon of 1866 (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.).
