Volute-krater (vase for mixing wine and water), early 6th century B.C. Attributed to Sophilos Greek, Attic Terracotta; H. 19 3/8 in. (49.15 cm) Purchase, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Fried Gift, 1977 (1977.11.2) Sophilos is the first known artist from the Athenian potters' quarter to have signed his name on his work—once as potter and three times as painter. This early form of the volute-krater is decorated on the front of the vessel with two boars, and on the back with a bull and another animal.
