The Bonsai Museum at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden…

23 Dec 2006 388
Steinhardt Conservatory: Bonsai Museum Across from the Aquatic House, to the left of the Trail of Evolution, is the C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, where BBG's famous collection of indoor and temperate or outdoor bonsai is exhibited in a Japanese-style architectural setting. BBG's bonsai collection is considered one of the finest in the world. It is the second largest on public display outside Japan, featuring as many as 100 specimens at any given time. Some of the trees in the collection are well over a century old. A stylized verandah complete with tokonoma, or alcove, looks out onto the entire exhibit. Text panels introduce the history of bonsai and explain culture and care. Text from: www.bbg.org/exp/stroll/conservatory_bonsai.html

The Healing Garden in Yale University Hospital in…

01 Mar 2011 312
The $467 million Smilow Cancer Hospital was built with support from a major philanthropic gift by Yale alumnus Joel E. Smilow (Yale College, 1954) and his wife, Joan. Smilow is the former chair, CEO and president of Playtex Products Inc. The design of the hospital is geared toward healing the mind as well as the body. In addition to housing state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, it includes several unique features that were suggested by a committee of cancer patients. Among these are an outdoor "healing garden" on the 7th floor, which has walkways that are heated to melt snow and take the edge off the cold. Because of this feature, the garden can be used year-round by patients and their families to relax and reflect. Text from: opac.yale.edu/news/article.aspx?id=7540
