(15.9 x 10.9 x 9.3 cm) Geography: Entrains-Sur-Nohain, France (Place of Discovery) This amphora has lost one of its handles. The scenes on the amphora include Bacchus and his consort, Ariadne, with their followers among temples, hills, and trees. A later inscription appears on the neck, where a missing handle was originally attached. The inscription reads, A V.S.D./MER (votum solvit deo mercurio), "dedication to Mercury." Pitcher with Incised Decoration Etruscan, 640-620 BC Terracotta Bucchero olpe Etruscan decorative motifs were often influenced by luxur goods imported from around the Mediterranean region. Animal friezes like those incised on this pitcher also appear on Near Eastern gold and silver vessels. The shape and the scale pattern on the shoulder were derived from Corinthian pottery, which may have also inspired the popular motif of the dog attacking the boar.
