Muralling (well it should be a word)

21 Sep 2005 126
Brian painted a fantastic mural at the Aratta community centre in Chernihiv, Ukraine. It's based on a horse from the antique Carousel on Brighton seafront. After we'd finished and gone home, a local art teacher encouraged children to continue the theme around the other three walls of the room. The result blends perfectly and has made a grey room into an incredibly colourful, fun place. We support the centre, which runs many projects to help the victims of Chernobyl, in Ukraine. Find out about it, and support us at www.aidconvoy.net Taken with a Pentax ME-Super on Agfa 200 without flash — probably (film type from memory.)

Evening community fountain II

31 Aug 2009 134
(Taken by Tonia) The Chernigov fountain. I was a bit aghast (along with the local population) when the famous and popular fountain made of giant frogs was done away with a few years ago. But now the city has really gone to town with things to boost and support the community. As well as the "old people's dancing" - waltzing around the town square of an afternoon - and the open-air karaoke, there was this: a new fountain with amazingly powerful jets, coordinated extremely tightly to a variety of musical pieces put out over a PA, all in time and mood with a series of coloured lights in the water. This must be the latest fashion in the CIS for a week or two later we found almost exactly the same thing in Bishkek, Kyrgystan. It was 11 o'clock at night and yet there were lots of families out enjoying the warm summer's evenings, and kids playing delightedly - and safely - amidst the splashes of water and feel of community.

Germanic pipes

31 Aug 2009 113
This is Radion, who has wonderful antique bagpipes from Germany, Spain, and Latvia. He is trying to establish a project to teach the playing of these pipes and the cultures of the countries from which they come, across Chernihiv and Ukraine. He's Tonia's (and thus Aid Convoy's) latest little side project! ;) Needless to say, John is going to try to get him some Irish pipes, and I some Scottish! It was particularly lovely to meet him in the park where he had been awaiting us, just playing his pipes to passing Saturday wedding parties. He'd chosen a spot with a lovely piece of raised ground under a tree which served as a seat for us. Later he played a little in the underground church-in-the-caves. That was truly amazing — I can't imagine how long it's been since that place heard music. He's very musical, loves even talking about it, and sings a little too.

This one was taken by Tonia but it's in here to show how Radion carefully chose a spot in the park where we'd have a good seat! ;)

Reunions, introductions, and goodbyes

31 Aug 2009 95
(This one was taken by Tonia's mum but it's in here to help tell the story...) John's car couldn't be taken into Russia after the departure of his team-mate, so we donated it for use by an orphanage, with help of my friends here, in Chernihiv, near Chernobyl, Ukraine. There are some ongoing customs issues, but the key thing to know is that our cars in Ukraine don't count as cars for customs purposes — they are "sports inventory", and this means it's not a problem to leave them there. Only wish that we, the Adventurists, or the Irish embassy had been able to extract this info from the Ukrainian customs a little quicker.
