Bathorë, Kamza, Albania

09 Aug 2010 61
This photo is from the set "Albania — Jane's photos", all of which are from the Aid Convoy preliminary trip to Bathore / Kamza, near Tirana, Albania, where we resurrected our project there. This set – readily identified by the lack of a black border around each photo – shows photos not taken by me, but by my colleague Jane. I don't normally upload other people's photos but these are here to complete the story when seen in conjunction with mine (with black borders), in the "Albania 2010" set.

This little guy was so cool. Just another Bathorë kid who really took to us. He'd been punched earlier this day and turned up sporting that plaster. I suspect somebody had tried to take his rollerblades! The "Lord of the Manor", insofar as a descendent of a pre-communism landowner can be called that... This is the very interesting and typically (as most Albanians I've had the pleasure of knowing) kind, Mandy. He's transforming the place into a probably unique (locally) centre for sustainable agriculture. Asking for directions by means of showing photographs of old friends! When I asked a policeman in this way, he stopped a passing motorist and ordered him to lead us to my friend's house! These guys at this café didn't even wait to be asked, but beckoned me over to see what assistance I needed. I love Albania. My old friends Fatmir and his wife, who I'd not seen in 7 years. I think it's safe to say they were pretty astonished (and I hope delighted) to see me again. Unforgotten projects :) Alongside are my colleague Jane, and (waving) a very generous local man from the nearby mosque who helped with translation. Lastly, our old friend Din. There were many familiar faces from before!

To find Fatmir, in the midst of a now much more substantially built-up former shanty town, I was asking for directions by means of showing old photographs of my friends! When I asked a policeman in this way, he stopped a passing motorist and ordered him to lead us to my friend's house!
