Three men and a boat

02 Jun 2009 74
Trying to catch my boat with a bit of polyprop rope. Seriously, they tie off with a thing about 5mm in diameter. There must be some kind of magnetic lock in the high-tech swing dampers the boat rests against. Right?

That Liverpool cliché

Couldn't resist. Not a fabulous shot, but hey, on a ferry with a fixed wide-angle lens. Note the new, almost-complete museum at almost the far right, just obscuring the Albert Dock. Progressing leftwards: Anglican Cathedral in the background; Liverpool One shopping redevelopment under the crane; the new Pier Head terminal for the Isle of Man ferries; the Port Authority dome behind it; the 1930s tunnel ventilation shaft behind the Cunard building, with an Isle of Man ferry in front; the famous twin-towered Liver building (White Star Line headquarters of Titanic-announcement fame pretty much behind that); Radio City tower; St. Nick's church; bunch of modern office/hotel stuff of no great note; enigmatic low-on-windows earlier modern car park/offices (in pale brown).

Exploration

Still desperately hoping that the Irish Sea will yet be the new North Sea? I think the smoke and the boat make this fairly iconic, but there's no more zooming potential to this already severely cropped shot from the 24mm. Just not the right lens for a ferry trip!

Offshore wind

Again, not a photo I'm pleased with, but a 24mm prime lens was a little restrictive at this distance. Still, the actual wind farms in the Mersey Estuary are a curio. I enjoyed seeing this one with white turbines against a blue sky whilst those of the one behind me, no longer in direct sunlight, looked mid-grey against the same sky. No way to get them all in the same shot at more than pixel-size though!
