Apparently these horses were one of the most important and lavish grave goods items in 7th Century China.
I was absolutely stunned to discover that it's possible to own something this old. This one is in a gallery, and of course galleries and musea have such things. But I recently found one in a coin-collectors' shop in London. Not quite so pretty (standing on all four legs) but in unmistakably the same style, and for £950. That's a lot of money, but for something that's over 1,000 years old..! I don't know how much this one with the raised foreleg would cost, but I WANT ONE!

Just a pretty pony. But he was striking, against the skyline, so I had to stop to say hello.

From the London "Open Doors Day", on which the public are annually allowed into buildings not normally open to them, or in some cases are allowed in to non-free attractions for free.
This is part of my favourite sculpture in London, a monument to Wellington and Waterloo, atop the arch which was intended to be the entrance to London, via Green Park. It's opposite Apsley House, Wellington's own pad... with the excellent address of "Number 1, London."
It reminds me somewhat of the amazing Soviet sculpture (in Ukraine) of Cossack riders — although that statue reaches across a road in terrifying fashion. (It's here .)

Muralling (well it should be a word)

Brian painted a fantastic mural at the Aratta community centre in Chernihiv, Ukraine. It's based on a horse from the antique Carousel on Brighton seafront.
After we'd finished and gone home, a local art teacher encouraged children to continue the theme around the other three walls of the room. The result blends perfectly and has made a grey room into an incredibly colourful, fun place.
We support the centre, which runs many projects to help the victims of Chernobyl, in Ukraine. Find out about it, and support us at www.aidconvoy.net

This would have been so lovely if I hadn't been on manual focus for a difficult subject and forgotten to turn it back onto auto! Still, it's a lovely example of how simply ready to be jolly and friendly everyone was out here.
Not unlike the guys selling watermelons. We had finally decided to stop to buy some of the many, many watermelons which are inexplicably* for sale at the side of the road all over these countries.
Something went a bit wrong with the negotiations. We ended up with seven of them crammed into the cars! When we were about to leave somebody politely pointed out that we hadn't paid nearly enough. The attempts to then give six of them back failed miserably, but in the end the lovely salesman asked, "tourists?" When we said yes, we were sent on our way with seven, now FREE, watermelons!
* Inexplicable because we never saw a single field of them actually growing!
