Rosslyn Chapel - arch detail

I had a polariser stuck to a zoom lens, and I hate flash. So the inside of this church, in low evening light, was never going to be easy — and I've caught nothing that does it justice. But I'm glad I nipped in to have a go, since they've banned photography there as of the 1st of January. Not because of flash, but because people kept tripping up while leaning for shots!

Launceston Castle Gatehouse

*So* much manipulation went into this – which I'd normally disapprove of – to get rid of the unsightly signs and traffic island in the middle of the road. It's by no means perfect (the far kerb and the bollard give it away) but I didn't want to spend an entire lifetime on it. Although I'm tempted to revisit it... Anyway, I much prefer the "old world" look that the street furniture was ruining.

Darn passers-by... the old post office at Tintagel.

I couldn't get a photo of this with which I was really happy, so I'll distract you with words instead. This is in the grounds of Blair Castle, a particularly good country estate, where the Duke is unique in the whole of Europe in being able to legally maintain a private army. Nowadays it's purely ceremonial, but as recently as the Second World War, the Atholl Highlanders served with the British Army.

Corinth 2

The Royal Garrison Church of St. George, Grand Depot Road, Woolwich. What a great set of names to conjour with! This ruin was destroyed by a V1 flying bomb during the second world war, but it remains consecrated and is used for memorial services. Driving past it, it looks absolutely stunning — I genuinely thought it might be a shored-up Roman ruin. The main wall behind the altar has an elaborate mosaic of a cavalry rider-cum-St. George which really could come from just about any classical era.
