The sisters of Merc-y

22 Apr 2010 98
Ben (230E, later series), "Rest in pièce de résistance" (240TD), and Molly (230E, early series), all of whom managed the entire Scumrun without problems. Not bad for 30-year-old cars, especially considering Molly (the eldest) hadn't moved since the previous year's Scumrun, and ran the Nürburgring along the way! (Laptime, after the brakes faded away, was 15 minutes. None too shabby!) The 30-somethings on the human side of the team don't scrub up too badly either ;)

Coaxing Molly to go sailing

Le Harve, France. Molly always overheats a little when standing still – I'm planning on fitting an electric fan – and when waiting for ferries (only) this seems to cause a little fuel evaporation, quickly solved by pouring a little into the top of the carb. Guess she doesn't like sailing!

Ragging the 'ring!

Fairly self-evidently, if you spot that it's me driving, this wasn't taken by me! Molly's particularly thin (175) tyres squealed like you wouldn't believe, and the auto 'box was occasionally a pain, but it was the rapidly cooking brakes that meant I had to back right off after about 5km. But considering that, a laptime of 15 minutes for a 30-year-old car is actually not too shabby! (New Ferrari lap record is just under 7 (which astonished everyone), and a good, sorted hot hatch can do it in 10 or so.)

George's car (and a hitcher)

George Galloway's wife's car, which I was driving back to the UK from the Gaza convoy. (In some good company from the convoy.) Here we're looking out over Damascus, Syria, with a random hitch-hiker; the second we'd picked up.

The Scottish convoy!

We met up with Little Bear's cousin, and the two vehicles which were returning home after the separate Scottish convoy - quite by chance, at Nuweba, waiting for the extremely dodgy ferry to Jordan, where you see us here, as we deal with customs procedures.

How to persuade a Mercedes-Benz W123 230E that it can indeed complete the Scumrun .
