Captured in my garden waiting for lunch to land on an Oxalis tetraphylla flower (also known as an Iron Cross plant).

Crab Spider with Bee. (+PiP)

11 Jun 2024 35 40 210
Taken in my garden. When I took this photo I thought that maybe the bee would have a chance to escape, but I couldn't wait around as I had an appointment. A couple of hours later I went and had another look and it was obvious the bee wasn't going anywhere (see the image in the PiP) as the spider had been well and truly subdued, although it must have taken a while. The PiP is not quite as sharp as the main image as it had got quite windy.......but it serves its purpose. So a good day for the spider........not so good for the bee!

Crab Spider (+PiP)

I've seen several crab spiders in my garden this year and they seemed to really like the Coreopsis flowers. This one is particularly well camouflaged. I noticed the one in the PiP on top of one of my compost bins.......and it wasn't impressed at having its photo taken..!! Sadly they all seem to have disappeared now but..........more next year, hopefully.

Goldenrod Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) (+PiPs)

Taken in my garden.........and this time I actually had my macro lens on the camera! PiP No 1.... is another shot of this beautiful Crab Spider. PiP No 2.....is a shot of a Common Candy-striped Spider (Enoplognatha ovata) with its egg case (I found this one in a curled up leaf of my lilac tree, which I managed to carefully roll back enough to get the shot (and of course I returned it to it's curled up state afterwards). Thanks for looking.

Crab Spider on Coreopsis Flower (+PiPs)

10 Aug 2023 22 24 148
While I was dead-heading the Coreopsis flowers in my garden yesterday afternoon, I spotted this very tiny Crab Spider nestled in the centre of one of them..........so I had to dash back indoors and grab my camera and macro lens, before getting down on my knees to get a couple of photos. Even with the macro lens, these had to be cropped. PiP1 is another view of the spider. PiP 2 is a quick shot I took with my thumb underneath to show some scale. Thanks for looking!

Crab Spider (2)

Crab Spider

I spotted this tiny little crab spider (less than 1cm) on some leaves in my garden. It is so well camouflaged that had it not moved, I probably wouldn't have seen it - I dashed off to get my camera, but by the time I got my macro lens fitted and got back in the garden it was gone. It was two days before I spotted it again and as usual I had the wrong lens on, so rather than leave it again I used my 40-150mm zoom. This is a large crop. View large if you can be bothered. The plant is a Stachys Byzantina commonly called Lambs Ear.
