This statue has been nearly a quarter century in the woods at Boyd's Cove. It's a twenty-minute brisk walk from the nearest road, so one must walk through the woods and birds and flies to see it, as it were, in the flesh. That physical fact adds to its weight when you do see it. And it's a weighty, moving piece of art. It, she, stands a good six feet tall and I, a tall man, looked eye-to-eye at her. The piece is called The Spirit of the Beothuk and was made by commission to the archaeological interpretation site there by Gerry Squires. When Gerry died eight years ago, some of his ashes were scattered at the site. His work and he himself are there. I've been meaning to go there for the twenty-four years since the statue was placed there. I'm glad I finally did so.
