This is one of the backsides of a hospital that, over its front entrance, bears the date 1855. Architecturally, it is one of my favourite buildings, partly because it is so very different from wing to wing, but partly because -- despite its constant use -- it has been left to moulder by the provincial government. That government wants to build a new one across town to replace this one, a good idea except for the specific site they will thus despoil. But that's another story. And when they build that one, they'll likely tear this one down, with all its late-19th-century and early-20th-century quirks.
