Bird's eye view of Cromer

The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Cromer, Norfolk. Since the 14th century the parish church has been in the centre of the town. However, after falling into disrepair it was rebuilt in the late 19th century by architect, Arthur Blomfield. At 160 ft 4 in (48.87 m) the church tower is the highest in the county. Also, of note are the vast stained glass windows which commemorate various members of the lifeboat crew and other features of the resort.

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur

02 Oct 2017 29 24 793
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica (French: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, pronounced [sakʁe kœʁ]), is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the supposed excesses of the Second Empire and socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighbourhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ. The Sacré-Cœur Basilica was designed by Paul Abadie. Construction began in 1875 and was finished in 1914. It was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

Lincoln Cathedral

06 May 2016 30 15 676
This is one of the finest Gothic buildings in Europe. The west front incorporates the first part of the surviving Romanesque cathedral from 1072. LINCOLN is an historic city, with many reminders of the past, with this grand Norman Cathedral dominating the landscape from the top of the hill, many small Medieval streets, and the remains of Roman occupation still on view. The Romans called it 'Lindum Colonia' and built the Fosse Dyke as a canal between the rivers Trent and Witham about year 120 AD. Most of it dates from the 13th century, where it was rebuilt in the gothic style by St Hugh Bishop.

The church was founded in 920, during Saxon times and the churchyard has two 9th-century Saxon crosses. During restoration work, in the 1840s, many carved fragments of Saxon stonework were found in and around the porch, as well as some ancient stone coffins.

St Leonard's Church, Rockingham.

03 Sep 2014 17 12 664
The parish church of Rockingham village, St Leonard's Church is a low irregular structure consisting of a nave and chancel, with a memorial chapel to the Watson family. It stands on the hill between the Castle and the Village. While there was almost certainly a chapel situated within the Castle walls in 1095, at the time of the Council of Rockingham, when William Rufus summoned a council of nobles, bishops and clergy to settle a dispute between himself and Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, little or nothing is positively known of the Church until the institution of Waleranus Teutonicus in 1217, over one hundred years after the building of the Castle. The 13th century Church suffered greatly at the time of the Civil War, when Cromwell's soldiers occupied Rockingham Castle. It was demolished for military reasons, and replaced by a small Chapel about 1650.

St Leonards Church, Rockingham

The parish church of Rockingham village, St Leonard's Church is a low irregular structure consisting of a nave and chancel, with a memorial chapel to the Watson family. It stands on the hill between the Castle and the Village since the 13th Century The Church is forty-six feet long, and twenty-four feet broad. The Chancel, in length twenty-nine feet six inches and in breadth eighteen feet. The north Chancel, twenty-seven feet and a half in length, and twelve feet six inches broad. In this are two pieces of timber laid across the beams, on which hangs a small bell". The Church remained in this state until a wooden tower was built on the north side, in 1776, at the expense of Lady Sondes of Rockingham Castle. This wooden tower was taken down in 1838 at the cost of £2.2s to be replaced by Richard Watson in 1845, by a small bell-tower, with octagonal pyramid roof, the design being taken from one existing in a Church in Oxfordshire.

The church was first mentioned in a document of 1089, but it was probably built earlier still. A re-used Roman column holds up the chancel roof and is a reminder that the church was built near the site of Roman public buildings. In the 15th century it was extended westwards and a 36m spire was added.
