These birds are threatened in Michigan and protected in many states. Worldwide, evidently, they remain fairly common . In Saint Ignace they're truly common, with several hundred nesting pairs. Their normal mode is perpetual motion. Over the years I've wasted many many pixels trying to get a worthwhile photograph of one in flight. This one's not quite as sharp as I'd like, but it's close.

Tern Steals Rock from Duck

The Mallard was just resting on this rock when the Tern came along and pushed him off. Tern rested a couple seconds, then was off again on his perpetual quest for fishes....

Out on the old ferry dock at the St. Ignace boat launch and park--I think the park's named Arnold's Dock #3, and to all appearances it was pretty much on US-2 before they bridged the Straits, which evidently forced the highway to move inland a bit. The terns were nesting on the far side of the slip, and gathering food for the kiddies....
