Amish children fishing on the Mississippi River at Guttenberg, Iowa. Timeless.

Another View from Pike's Peak

Pike's Peak, Iowa .... For those of you whose mental universe contains Father Marquette: This is the point where he first encountered the Mississippi River.

Not my fault Zebulon Pike named two high places after himself.... This is the Mississippi River shot from far northern Iowa; the town across the way is Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin; on the Iowa side you can find Marquette where the bridge crosses and McGregor across from the parked barges. Very pretty place. We just spent a week camped within an easy walk of this view.

South of Dubuque. Except for cropping, this photo's pretty much like it came out of the camera.

This is from Iowa's Pike's Peak, above McGregor. That's the Mississippi in the foreground, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, across the way. Like Colorado's Pike's Peak, this location was discovered ("mapped" might be a better word) and apparently named by Zebulon Pike.

Proving beyond contest that it's quite possible to take bad photographs with an excellent camera.... Dubuque, Iowa. Camera: Nikon N90s

Highway 61. Revisited.

The US-61 bridge across the Mississippi between Dubuque, Iowa, and Grant County, Wisconsin. I rather like the way all the curving roads come together for the crossing.

Iowa House

10 Jan 2006 97
Last in this series, until I discover more photographs. Another photo from my mother's 1930s Iowa childhood. As before, I know virtually nothing about these photographs. I do like those shadows. This appears to be the house shown in an earlier photo .

Prairie Home

Another house from my mother's western Iowa childhood, sometime in the 1930s. Unfortunately, I know basically nothing about the photograph. Interesting porch, though.

Iowa House, with Man

This one appears to have a story. I just don't know it. The town may or may not be Carroll. I have a handful of photographs which date from Mom's childhood in western Iowa. We can safely assume all of 'em date from the 1930s. Unfortunately, I don't know much more than I just told you about most of the set....

School Bus

Probably Dedham, Iowa, 1930s. From my mother's collection; she grew up in Carroll. Information about the bus would be welcome--leave a comment if you know anything. Thanks. Photographer and camera unknown. Scan updated--but still not good--12/20/05.

Iowa Barn

27 Dec 2005 95
I've got a pair of not-quite-identical photographs of this pretty barn. It's somewhere in western Iowa. Or at least it was in the 1930s, when the photo appears to have been taken. Looks a lot like it was under construction. Once again: There's a story here, somewhere. I don't know it, though.

West Michigan @ Quad Cities, 5/19/2003. The ballpark's been rebuilt (& renamed) since then, but it's still alongside the Centennial Bridge and next to the Mississippi. Another photo to illustrate a blog posting . Original photo here . 40 game photos here .

Explored! #411 on Flickr [September 8, 2008, but no longer in the top 500] Thanks! Obviously, nearly everyone moved.... John O'Donnell Stadium, May 19, 2003; Centennial Bridge (and the Mississippi) in the background. West Michigan Whitecaps at Quad City River Bandits.
