Carrying CSX across the Grand River. Before Chessie bought the line this was a Pere Marquette structure.

Rafts on the New River
29 May 2005 |
|
A view from one of the overlooks the National Park's constructed near West Virginia's New River Bridge. The rafts on the river are about to land, as the lower New River raft trips generally end at the bridge(s). While they don't show well, there are CSX lines on both sides of the river at this point. The haze is normal.
That's the Fayette Station Bridge. The old road across the gorge begins (speaking loosely) near where I took the picture, jackknifes down the gorge literally beneath the viewing station, crosses the river, and makes a similar trip up the other side. Much of this trip is now restricted to one-way traffic, but until 1977 this skinny road carried vehicles in both directions across the gorge.
Sunfield, from the North

Sunfield's about four miles down the way from Mulliken (Michigan, in both cases). The two towns are about the same size, and both live mostly between the tracks (CSX, these days) and highway M-43. Historically both are grain elevator towns and provided services to local farmers.
The biggest physical difference between the villages is that our town spills over to the north of the railroad, while in Sunfield the rails define the town's northern boundry. As this photo shows.

The C&O (CSX, now, but this is a location where the C&O context is really important) crosses the New River below Hawks Nest. Ansted, West Virginia; 1997.

This is an not-particularly-good old scan. I'll post a rescan when I locate the original....

The Grand Ledge, Michigan, railroad trestle from the Ledges Trail along the Grand River.
Have a good year, everyone. Blessings.
Grand River Crossing

The Grand River rail trestle in Grand Ledge, again; the last photo from our excursion a couple weekends back.
This trestle is known locally as the "High Bridge," which suggests they've never seen an actual high bridge. Nonetheless, it's a substantial crossing and an impressive structure.

The CSX (originally Pere Marquette) railroad trestle across the Grand River in Grand Ledge. I've shown you this bridge before. Among other things, it defines the boundary of GL's Fitzgerald Park.
Another shot from the Ledges Trail this afternoon. Terrific light, but an ill-chosen camera setting washed out the sky. I gotta pay more attention to this stuff.
Ferry Yard

The best photo I took on our "accidental" visit to Port Huron's Desmond Landing.
This tank was left behind when the Ferry Yard was abandoned. I presume it contained fuel for the switcher, but that could (of course) be all wrong....
Port Huron Ferry Slip

This is the ferry slip in Port Huron, Michigan, taken from the park they've built at Desmond Landing . CSX used to have a busy yard, just south of the Black River, whose purpose was to handle rail traffic which crossed the US/Canadian border on barges. That traffic has migrated to the new St. Clair tunnel (now named for Paul Tellier ), which opened in 1995.
That's Sarnia, Ontario, in the background.

Soo Line in Mulliken
18 Jun 2005 |
|
About the time I moved here, the Soo Line abandoned its Upper Peninsula heritage, sold the track to Wisconsin Central, and started running trains on CSX's old Pere Marquette mainline between Chicago and Detroit--and on to Canada. Emotionally I didn't like the move, but it did bring Soo Line locomotives into my daily life. The occasional old Alco which showed up in those years was a bonus for my railfan tendencies.
Then the Soo Line was fully absorbed by parent line Canadian Pacific, and most of the locomotives were repainted to CP's red.
This photo--with Soo Line locomotives!--was captured a couple days ago. The road must be running near capacity, and pulling old locos out of mothballs....
Photo taken from Mulliken's Main Street, looking west, under far from ideal conditions. Looks kinda like a Monet in the larger size, if you can imagine Monet in Michigan and chasing trains. I confess it's a bit of a stretch.

Another R-O-W !
The Pere Marquette Railroad laid its rails to Lansing a decade after the LS&MS , in 1888. One result of that tracklaying project was my town, Mulliken. As you can see, this line is still in operation; it's owned by CSX, with lots of Canadian Pacific traffic via Soo Line trackage rights (I like these complications).
We haven't really had a lot of snow this season, but it's been quite grey much of the time.
This photo was taken from behind the Mulliken Post Office; I was facing east, with the empty grain silos just out of the picture to the right.

Work Train
21 Jun 2005 |
|
June 1995: I drove downtown to check the mail after work and noticed this interesting train parked behind the Mulliken Elevator. Grabbed the camera, wasted a roll of film, went home.
Joan, who'd just joined the household a few days before, was a little curious about why it took half an hour to check the mail....
Regarding that crane: It's CSX (nee L&N) 41422, built by American Crane and Equipment (they apparently now go by ACECO). Seems to me they were using this big crane for bridge repairs, but it's a distant memory at this point.
All the buildings (silos) in this photo are now gone. The siding's still there, but overgrown and mostly unused....
