Into the Woods

12 Nov 2014 2 257
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (on Lake Superior), Munising, Michigan. July of 1998. One perhaps-unexpected result of playing with OpticsPro (photo post-processing software) and Photo Supreme (a photo indexing system) has been that I've been looking at old pix. Though this one was processed using AfterShot Pro, it's one of those "found" photos.

Dahlias in the Circle

09 Oct 2014 2 240
This year's version of our Circle Garden wasn't really a success. A half-dozen Shasta Daisies just don't cut it, and the Dahlias I planted in May seemed pretty unenthusiastic about the location. Until mid-September, anyway. Finally they started growing. And blossoming.

The Front Garden

This is our show garden, out front by the sidewalk where anyone can see. It begins flowering in March and has color far into fall. One spring Joan suggested building a garden beside the driveway. Since we already had a couple driveway gardens, I needed that clarified. Out we went, looked over this corner of the lawn, and agreed to a 4 by 8 foot rectangle with Burning Bushes at both ends. Digging out that rectangle was painful. Evidently the contractors who built our lawn put a six-inch layer of clay just below the turf line. But we eventually planted our bushes, and filled the intervening space with tall Verbena and Cranesbills and Bellflowers and Foxgloves and a Columbine. And a couple Blanket Flowers. Blanket Flowers, we've since learned, will take over your garden. So will Cranesbill, but they're more patient; they send out colonies. This bed changes constantly. We doubled its size one spring, and then expanded it again. One year I ripped out one of the Burning Bushes. We add perennials every year. Once we removed almost everything on the front half, and planted new stuff. This year we've Coneflowers and Sedum (yep, we plant Sedum everywhere) and Yarrow and Black-Eyed Susan and Beard Tongue--and still the Blanket Flowers and Cranesbill and even a bit of Verbena, all descended from the originals. And a Columbine. We really like Columbine. This garden's a bit of a mess, just now; next spring we'll likely rebuild it. And that bush really needs a trim. That's coming in a day or two. My brother calls this The Square Garden, which is accurate but implies we've no imagination. Perhaps he's right, but we're fairly proud of this effort.

Tables, Baker Sanctuary

19 Jul 2014 2 182
A few days back.... We'd planned to walk the trails at Michigan Audubon's Bernard Baker sanctuary, but the bugs drove us away before we'd barely begun. We'll return, I'm sure; we hike there pretty regularly.

Fence

Also on Wellfare Road in Danby Township. The Portland State Game Area has a farm in its middle; this fence seems to be intended to keep the SGA visitors out of the field.

Tree

In the Grand River, Grand Ledge, Michigan. This is the downstream end of First Island, which Wikipedia reports was once an animal park featuring deer and bears. One assumes it was bigger in those days.

Trees by the Lake

Three Lakes, near Richland, Michigan. While the individual lakes don't have names, this is the middle lake. The photo was taken from 35th street, which runs between the middle lake and the easternmost one. When I was in junior high--many, many years back--my dad and I would hie off to Three Lakes and fish. The place still looks much the same, but you can apparently no longer rent a boat for the afternoon.

This started out as a series of focus experiments. I liked this version best.

Daylilies!

04 Jun 2014 1 154
While the daylilies are about due, I didn't even realize we had any plants with buds. Surprise! Our yard has lots of daylilies, in a variety of colors. Expect to see more.

Clark Lake Trail Ferns

Today's third photo from that 2003 hike. I guess the message is that there's more to the Tahquamenon park than the falls and the river....

Walkamile Trail

13 Mar 2014 239
Hoffmaster State Park, Norton Shores, Michigan. Someday the weather will clear up and we'll get back to this trail, and the Lake Michigan beach. Even with the blown out highlight, I really like this photo. I've a version without the blowout that just isn't as good.
