Take Me Out

The Lansing Lugnuts were scheduled to open their home season today, against the Dayton Dragons at what they used to call Oldmobile Park. I was planning to be there, in my favorite seat (that would be Section N, Row 4, Seat 8--directly behind the visiting team's dugout). But of course they're not playing, so we'll settle for this photo from a Lansing/Dayton game on 4/23/2013.
The batter's Seth Mejias-Brean, and the catcher is Santiago Nessy. (Sorry; haven't got the ump's name at my fingertips; I photographed the game but didn't score it--which is unusual. [Ted Turocy tells me it's Blake Mickelson.]) My next two photos show that this swing resulted in a popup, but I don't know where it landed or whether someone caught it.

Baseball season's started. So I think I'll post some baseball pix this week.
Lansing's Ryan Noda and Kevin Smith collide after Smith captures a Nick Yarnall (Great Lakes Loons) popup in short left field--from yesterday's game at Lansing's Cooley Law School Stadium.

A camera note: This photo kinda shows both the strengths and weaknesses of the Oly OM-D EM-1 Mk II with the 40-150 mm f/2.8. This is a fairly severe crop of the original, and came out reasonably sharp. But I've lost some detail I'd likely have gotten with my D500 (using my 300 mm f/4.0 lens, probably), if I still had that setup. Some of the detail's lost to the shorter lens-equivalence; some's lost to the smaller sensor.
With my previous setup--a D300 with the 300 mm lens--I'd not have got the sequence that includes this photo. It just didn't have the reflexes to find the focus that quickly.
These things are tradeoffs, folks. I'm satisfied with the change, but not blind to the costs.
Relay

Lansing Lugnut shortstop Peter Mooney relays the ball to first base. The baserunner, who's out, is Ronny Gil of the Quad Cities River Bandits; Mooney's throw would not get QC batter/runner Oscar Taveras.
The Midwest League's regular season ends on Labor Day, and is followed by a three-tiered playoff that ends in mid-month. In 2011 Lansing hosted Quad Cities (they play in Davenport) on September 15 for the second game of a best-of-five series.
The Bandits won the game by a 5-3 score, putting them up on the series 2 wins to no losses. They'd wrap the championship up at home the next night.

Two pics today. Because I want to tell two stories.
Just a reminder that I take lots of photographs at baseball games, only a few of which have shown up in this project.
